Unicorns, on the other hand, have been discovered in Mesopotamian art. It also appeared in several Indian and Chinese myths and legends. Ctesias, a Greek historian, wrote the first description of the single-horned animal, which was related to Indian wild asses with resemblances to horses, white bodies, blue eyes, and longhorns colored in red, black, and white.

The real animal referenced by Ctesias was most likely the Indian rhinoceros, according to legend. Unicorns were described as white horses with a single horn and magical power by ancient Celts, Persians, and Romans. It was revered by the Celts as a symbol of grace, strength, and freedom. Unicorns are so afraid of being captured by hunters that they claim that the only way to find them is for a maiden to go to the forest alone. It has been a symbol of Scotland since William I put it on the Scottish coat of arms in the 12th century.
