Lottie has revolutionized the world of animation. To give a very basic definition, Lottie is a file format specific for animations, much like GIF. Due to Lottie animations, users can now display high-quality animations without any problems, such as pixelation, large file size, or slow webpage loading speeds. A single Lottie file is many times smaller than other formats, such as GIF, and can be easily edited.

The transition of the world towards Lottie animations has been quite smooth, thanks to the many tools available. To help you do the same, we have created our list of best Lottie plugins, players, and tools!

1. Bodymovin Plugin

One of the most popular plugins for Lottie is Bodymovin, which lets users export rendered animations in .json file format directly from Adobe After Effects. It also supports PNG and SVG. This Lottie plugin is available free of cost on Github and supports many features, for instance, shapes, solids, images, comps, and nulls. Most text animations are supported except for Small caps or Vertical Scale. To date, the bodymovin plugin partially supports expressions, and many more are being added each day. This was the original extension introduced by the pioneers of Lottie, which allowed users to export, preview and play the Lottie animations.

2. Lottie Files AE Plugin

The LottieFiles plugin does everything that users can do with Bodymovin and much more. It allows developers to instantly preview Lottie animations, share them during their developing stage from within the plug and make edits to them, such as background colour, file size, etc. Developers can push the animation to multiple devices with a single click, making the testing stage much easier.

The ‘preview’ tab allows users to view animations they have uploaded at any point in time. Moreover, the ‘explorer’ tab allows users to directly access the LottieFiles library from within the plugin. Users can then directly edit the layers and customize the Lottie animation according to their requirements. Hence, this plugin works better when the purpose is to share private demos of files or access already-made resources from the web.

3. Lottie Pro Widget

Lottie Pro is an Elementor widget that allows smooth and code-less web integration of Lottie files. Users can upload any animation they like, trigger it according to the user interaction and adjust the dimensions and behaviour.

It also offers the options of both external URLs and direct upload to access the Lottie animations. Everything inside the widget is click-and-drop; for instance, to trigger the animations, users need to go to the settings tab and select the trigger from the drop-down menu. Selecting ‘hover’ from the menu means that the animation will get activated if the user hovers the cursor over it. Find information about all the excellent features available in this widget here!

4. LottieFiles Desktop

LottieFiles Desktop is a Lottie player made specifically for windows and macs. Using it, developers can preview and test their .json files right from their desktops.

When the user logs in, it automatically syncs the Lottie animations already present in their Lottiefiles library. Once inside the player, users can change the background colour, take a direct screenshot and view useful information relating to the animation. They can also directly upload the animation to Lottiefiles.com. This is an extremely handy tool for anyone who wants to test the look and feel of their Lottie animations on their local computer.

5. Lottie for Webflow

Since Lottie files are highly customizable, allow high webpage responsiveness, and do not impact the loading speeds, they are quite popular for websites. Webflow also offers direct integration of Lottie files through their online website builder. Similar to Lottie Pro Widget, it also allows user interaction-based animation triggers with zero lines of code. To use Lottie animations using webflow, users must perform three basic steps:

  • Create a container for the Lottie Animation.
  • Create a Lottie animation in Adobe After Effects or access it from a Lottie library and drop it into the container.
  • Select the appropriate animation trigger.

Your Lottie animations are ready to run and do their magic!

6. Bodymovin Player

Apart from the popular export plugin, bodymovin also offers an online web player for Lottie animations. It has an extremely basic interface. It requires users to upload the Lottie files by dropping them directly into the player window. The Lottie animation begins playing automatically.

It offers two options to interact with the animations. Clicking on the running animation stops it. Users can stop the animation at any frame to view it. Secondly, users can use the keyboard key ‘c’ to change the background colour from transparent to black or white. Here’s a view of the bodymovin Lottie player:

7. SVG to Lottie

SVG to Lottie is a small tool available on the LottieFiles website. You can access it by typing https://lottiefiles.com/svg-to-lottie in the search bar. Although small, the SVG to Lottie tool carries immense benefits for animators and creators. It allows developers to animate their already created SVG icons and illustrations.

The process involves dropping an SVG into the tool and selecting the type of animation users want to apply to their file. It also provides options of uploading the file for a preview or downloading it as a Lottie.

8. Skottie

Skottie is a native player for Lottie files. It is a part of Skia, a 2D graphics library that offers APIs and works as a graphics engine for many notable sites. The Skottie player allows users to run Lottie animations online to preview them. Developers and creators can also view a performance chart of the running Lottie file. Furthermore, it has a built-in GIF creator that provides a direct download of the newly created GIF. There is also a text editor and animation editor present in this player. Users can upload any Lottie animation and play, rewind, edit or export it. Overall, Skottie provides much more options and powerful tools to its players. However, the interface can be better, and it is still in the testing phase.

9. LottieLab

LottieLab is an animation editor, introduced as an easy-to-use replacement of After Effects by the popular web-based editor Figma. The problem with Adobe After Effects is only one –it is not everyone’s cup of tea. Figma has successfully addressed this problem by bringing everyone on the same page.

With the help of LottieLab, developers, designers, and managers will be able to work seamlessly through the same platform without having to share folders and files. The app will support multiple persons working simultaneously on the same project, much like Google Docs. Furthermore, users will be able to import their assets from Figma, Illustrator, After Effects, etc.

Currently, the app is in the beta phase, with more than 3000 signups present on the waitlist, which includes big names like Google, TikTok, and many more!

10. Vidalgo Viewer

Vidalgo Viewer is an upcoming web player for Lottie animations. Currently, a few animations present on the blog can be played through the viewer. It also offers a direct download in various formats, such as JSON, GIF, MP4, and MOV. Users can also share the animations with the help of a link or through direct posting to several social media platforms.

Click on the animation to open the Vidalgo viewer

In the future, users will be able to upload their animations, edit them inside the viewer or save free animation ideas by other artists in their gallery. Furthermore, users will also be able to convert their artwork into NFTs and sell them on the OpenSea marketplace. It can prove to be an excellent tool along with a library for people who use, create, edit or tinker with Lottie animations.

Infographics Trends and Animated Infographics in 2022

With the rise of social media usage, visual content is becoming more and more popular than mere texts. From informational videos to sending memes to your friends and family, visual content is what people love nowadays. A popular type of visual content is infographics- packed with information, made to be attractive to the audience. Want to know which infographics to choose for your content? Keep reading because, in this post, we will tell you about the different infographics trends of 2022!

But before we dive into the trends, let’s discuss what infographics are:

What are Infographics?

Infographics are an aesthetic and attractive combination of text and visual elements that portray the required information, for instance, charts, animated figures, geometrical shapes, etc.

Here is an example of an infographic that shows multiple layers of a sandwich and the place each ingredient comes from. You can see that they have shown a mouth-watering illustration of making a sandwich, which any food lover would be interested in!

Now that you know what infographics are, let’s discuss different infographics trends for 2022:

There are numerous different trends that content producers follow when creating infographics, depending on their data/information type. Here are the best ones

Data Visualization:

If you have content with numbers and statistics, data visualization (charts and tables) is the best way to go.

Whether you want to show the population growth rate of a place over the years or the percentage increase in the sales of a certain product, data visualizing techniques can easily grasp your audiences’ attention. They can not only display a large data set attractively, but the information displayed is also quite easy to read and understand.

Some of the main elements used in such infographics are:

  • Charts (Pie charts, line charts, flow charts)
  • Graphs (a bar graph, histograms)
  • Tables
  • Timeline

With these elements, the data doesn’t seem too complex for the audience. And due to its attractive colours and visual design, users are automatically attracted to it. This way, users can grasp the concepts without perusing long documents filled with statistics and numbers.

Here’s an example of a pie chart infographic showing the market share of different brands.

Inclusive Illustration Infographics:

The inclusive illustration infographics use different characters and visual objects to present the basic idea of the infographics. With simple and attractive characters and icons used, this type of infographic appeal to a wide variety of audience because of its subtle yet interesting design. That is why it is one of the popular infographics trends of 2022.

From step-by-step procedure guidance to representing the characteristics of individuals from a certain region, the possibilities are endless.

Below you can see inclusive illustration infographics showing the expected traits from a modern-day man:

Modular Infographics:

If a certain piece of visual content has too much text bundled up in one place, the users may not be very interested in it. Therefore, such infographics lack visual appeal. With the modular design of infographics, users can add large chunks of text content without a clatter. When needed, this text can be viewed as an individual piece of infographics that otherwise will be in a pack with other modular units of the parent infographics.

This way, the users who need to access more information from a certain portion of the infographics can do so. However, the first impression of the infographics remains aesthetically appealing to others. Secondly, people can get the complete picture easily as these infographics have large pieces of content hidden inside. Moreover, this design increases engagement with the content as well.

3D and Isometric Infographics:

Unlike two-dimensional designs with very little depth, 3D infographics can prove much more attractive. With their realistic geometries and immersive appearances, 3D infographics are the way to go in today’s day and age.

Moreover, isometric designs make the designs feel symmetrical and with more realistic depth. 3D infographics combined with the isometric element are highly engaging as they keep the audience immersed in their creative atmosphere.

These infographics are especially popular for representing maps and similar things. Maps with 3D and isometric infographics provide the users with a true sense of depth.

You can see a similar example below. There is a 3D and isometric infographic of a farm with different areas labelled. With such infographics, the users can easily visualise lands and places which can help them grasp the information better.

Interactive Infographics:

Similar to modular infographics, interactive ones can contain a wide array of information with the control at the users’ end. As a result, users can choose how much they want to view at a single time. Modular infographics can be considered as a part of interactive infographics, but the latter has a wider range of possibilities.

Telling a story to your audience, or taking them through the detailed working of your company has never been easier. Just provide them with an interactive visual tour through interactive infographics!

They will keep your audience engaged by allowing them to explore a bunch of content without overwhelming them with information. That is because these infographics take you through the content at your own pace. Furthermore, these infographics can reduce the bounce rate of your website and have a positive impact on its SEO.

In the example below, you can simply hover the mouse at certain locations of the shown infographics to see more information regarding the product. What is more, is that you can directly order the product from a store if you like the product!

Example of an interactive infographic - a popular infographics trend of 2022

Cartoon-Style Infographics:

Somewhat similar to the inclusive illustration infographics, cartoon-style infographics use different cartoonish figures to show the information. These figures give out a very friendly vibe and attract users to the information or product they represent. Furthermore, these infographics tend to be memorable and are usually used with vibrant colours to make these pop out from the rest of the information.

Here is a cartoon-style infographic showing various symptoms of allergy:

Animated Infographics – Add all of them together!

Just as the name suggests, animated infographics are infographics with active animations. You can use any popular trend or other infographics type. Simply animate them to get your animated infographics. This way, whether you need the modularity of module infographics or the realistic depth of 3D and isometric infographics, you can use any infographics you like according to their benefit.

That’s not all! Animated infographics have numerous benefits due to the various animated (or moving) elements it has:

Improved Storytelling:

In this day and age, where social media platforms like TikTok are gaining popularity due to their short content that can provide a good amount of information within people’s attention span, animated infographics are the way to go! With the extra immersion they provide and the ability to lead the audience through the entire content without letting them get bored, animated infographics can raise the bar of storytelling and information sharing and make you stand out from the rest of the competition.

Even more attractive!

Infographics are more attractive than simple text content, and animated infographics take that to an even higher level. Moving icons, shapes, characters, and sometimes even text, enhances their visual appeal, and hence, the audience is more likely to view them.

Enhanced engagement:

With users more likely to have their attention fixated on animated infographics due to the extra level of immersion they provide, users’ engagement with your content will increase. Not only that, from the SEO perspective, with higher retention times of the audience at your website, the bounce rate is bound to decrease. And, if your animated infographics are well-made, more users are likely to link to them, providing your website with a backlink profile automatically made, which in turn will improve its rankings on search engines, such as Google.

Infographics are a fun way to communicate the required information to your audience without making them lose their attention. The possibilities for their designs are endless, and it only requires your creativity as to how well you can muster these data and content in them. Whether you decide to go with the simple data visualization elements to display some statistics or create complete animated infographics with interactive elements to keep the users engaged for a longer period, the content displayed will also depict whether or not the audience will decide to stay on it.

Therefore, high-quality and attractive content and icons and figures in infographics can be a game-changer if used correctly, which is why they are some of the most popular infographics trends!

Lottie is a fast-growing animation format, which is quickly traversing through the industry of every kind towards the big names. Companies like Fiverr, IHeartRadio, Google, and New York Times use Lottie animations in their apps and projects. Many platforms are emerging that sell and promote Lottie animations –Vidalgo being one of them, and several businesses have acknowledged the speed and quality of vector-based animations on websites. When everyone is experimenting, why should the designers stay behind?

That is why, in this post, we will be giving an overview of the best software libraries for Lottie so the designers and creators can have a quick resource they can peruse anytime they want!

Best Software Libraries for Lottie

A software library is an open-source set of well-tested, pre-written, easily implementable code to perform useful tasks. Software libraries not only cut down the time to create logic from scratch; they also act as a learning tool for beginners. So, whether you’re a rookie android developer looking to divulge into the world of Lottie or a well-established web designer, these Lottie SW libraries can surely help you out!

1. Lottie-Player Web Component

Lottie player web-component is a small Lottie library that lets users play Lottie animations and Telegram Stickers on their websites. A web component is any piece of code that works with JavaScript Libraries and can be loaded across modern browsers. Since Telegram Stickers (TGS) consist of JSON text, they can be run like any other Lottie animations on a website.

It offers methods of importing the package into the code using JavaScript, content delivery method, or local installation. Users can utilize the code snippets to load the player directly on their website, or tweak it in other environments, for instance, with NextJS, NuxtJs, and ReactJs.

This library loads the Lottie player and telegram player separately. However, they offer similar properties. Designers can change the background, autoplay, loop, or play the animations when the mouse hovers above them. There are many other tweak-able properties of a Lottie player. For instance, by using the ‘direction’ property set to 1, animations play in the forward direction, and when set to -1, animations can play in the backward direction.

Along with these, there are built-in JavaScript methods for playing animations and descriptive commands to customize the overall appearance of the player on your website. Let’s say you want the player to have a background colour that matches the overall theme of your website; you will use –lottie-player-toolbar-background-color: #e90a0a to get a specific shade of red.

2. Lottie Interactivity Library

Lottie interactivity library is specifically built to be used with the Lottie Player. Using it, designers can make their animations interact with the scrolling or cursor actions of the user.

The installation commands are the same as the Lottie web player: via yarn, npm, and cdn. To use the library, the user must load it first by placing this script into the body of their HTML page:

<script src=”https://unpkg.com/@lottiefiles/lottie-player@0.4.0/dist/lottie-player.js”></script>

Once done, the user must add a valid Lottie animation with an ID set to its name and configure it.

Configuration:

Configuring involves an action array, which includes elements such as seek, play, stop, etc. This array can take multiple elements. Inside the actions array, there are objects which can have values between 0 and 1, with 0 being 0% and 1 being 100%. For instance, the visibility array has start and end values like this: visibility[0,.7]; here, it means that the animation should start when the object is just appearing on the screen and stop when 70% of the object is visible. For the frames array, the ending frame should be where the interactivity should end (mostly the last frame).

This Lottie library also offers several interactivity modes that users must configure. ‘Scroll’ syncs the animation to the scrolling of the window, ‘cursor’ to sync the animation to the cursor position and the newly introduced ‘chain.’

Chain mode allows chaining multiple animation segments depending on how the user interacts with it. For more information, click here.

The library also offers other methods for configuring the animation, such as React and Vue.

3. Lottie-js

For programmers inclined towards object-oriented programming (OOP), this Lottie library can prove to be very handy. The Lottie-js library maps the Lottie JSON entirely to an object-model and hence, makes manipulating and dealing with properties extremely simple. Programmers no longer have to understand the complex structure of the Lottie file to interact with it if they are using this Lottie library.

This Lottie library is written 90% in TypeScript and has a few JavaScript code snippets too. Node.js version 12 or 14 is needed to install it on the local computer from nodejs.org. For more information about the setup, click here.

Structure of Lottie-json Library:

The library has several classes, with the ‘Animation’ class being the root one, carrying the most frequently used parts of the code (helper methods). For example, the command ‘fromURL ( ‘insert the url’); maps the class instance from URL to Lottie JSON, which can be represented by some constant and manipulated.

Following the ‘Animation’ class is the ‘metaclass .’As the name suggests, this class carries metadata information such as author, description, parent (if any), or theme colour. Most of this information is optional. This class has two more methods.

Furthermore, it has classes named Layer, Assets, and Shapes. Lottie files can have several layers and assets. Layers can have different shapes, and shapes can have more shapes inside them.

To print data from animation, programmers can use simple commands, such as console.log(‘Frame Rate’, anim.frameRate). This command will print the file’s frame rate represented by the constant ‘anim’ on the console. Similarly, width, height, and other features can be manipulated by using ‘anim. width and anim. height’, respectively, provided that the Lottie file is represented by this constant.

This library has several detailed features and components to make your life easy. You can read about them in the detailed documentation here.

4. Lottie Toggles for Android

This Lottie library helps you add toggles to your android app. More specifically, this library helps you add customized animated toggles and switches, which they call “a LottieSwitch.”

The implementation is quite basic. The users need to add this Lottie library inside the dependency {} block. Afterwards, they need to add the .json file of the switch inside the specified directory and select the switch in the layout file for it to be visible. Users can also include a listener to attach a sound with the toggle.

Using this library, anyone can add their own .json toggle, play with the toggle speed, and set the value accordingly. Such switches are especially handy when android users want to go from dark mode to light mode and vice versa.

5. Lottie Theming Library

The Lottie theming library allows colour and property extraction from the Lottie itself and creates an editable file. Users can attach self-set themes with their Lottie animations and play the Lottie with multiple themes according to the day’s time or location. For example, users can play a sunny-themed Lottie during a sunny day and a raining-themed Lottie during an overcast day by adding weather parameters as a condition. This Lottie library involves colour extraction by using the Lottie-js library; find more information here.

Configuration:

The Lottie theming library requires some basic configuration to extract colours that can be changed with the theme. After initializing the library and calling the init method, users must call the createConfig() command to obtain the configuration file. Users can view the colour and its exact frame and shape inside the ‘Properties’ array. Using this, custom palettes can be added to the library by directly modifying the ‘Themes’ array in the configuration file, as shown in the example below:

Themes: [

         {
           darkTheme: {
             'Color 0': '#ffffffff',
             'Color 1': '#ffffffff',
             'Color 2': '#000000ff',
             'Color 3': '#000000ff',

           }}]

Now users can apply this theme by calling the applyTheme(themeConfig, themeName). The output of this library is a Lottie that plays with the Lottie player.

Best SW Lottie Library: The Conclusion!

There are tons of libraries present online that let you customize your Lottie entirely to match your brand’s theme and colour palettes. As a programmer, you can create quick custom solutions for your clients or your business. Not only that, you can utilize these libraries to incorporate Lottie files into various platforms, for instance, IOS, Andriod, Web, and Flutter.

Small Animation: Why is Lottie Small?

03/03/2022
blog

Lottie is a fast-growing animation file format. It is JSON-based and is known for its small size, making its transfer and usage across different platforms very easy. The file space taken by Lottie is several times smaller than the commonly used formats like animated GIF or MP4, and at the same time, maintains a better quality than other small file formats. Another ability of Lottie animations is that they can be turned into interactive animations. For instance, some animations play when a user hovers a mouse over it or starts playing as the user scrolls through the page. These animations are much more engaging and make the viewers’ website experience more fun.

A big question that arises about Lottie files is: What makes them a small animation format? You might have wondered how they carry so many capabilities yet stay 60x smaller than an animated GIF. Before answering your question, let’s see how you can use Lottie:

Lottie is Small: Why Should You Care?

Lottie files have several uses that can fulfil the needs of users and animators. Some of these are as follows:

Create

The AE plugin of Lottie allows you to create your animations. You can create, render, and test Lottie animations in Adobe After Effects. Afterwards, you can export it to any place you like and use it for your required purpose. The plugin allows you to export your work in any format at any place.

Preview

Another great use of Lottie files is that you can preview them anywhere on any device, such as Android, iOS, Windows, etc. All you have to do is open the Lottie web and drop the Lottie file you have in your storage to open and preview it in real-time. Lottie file is very simple to preview and would not need any single alphabet or line of coding to open.

Edit

Lottie file format allows easy editing of your animations. You just need to open the online editor provided by Lottie on any device and import your files to it. After you have imported the files, you can then edit your content using tools provided in the Lottie editor. Then, you can export your edited files to any place and any device again. Lottie allows customization of your animations with great ease without requiring any professional-level skills.

Select through free files

Along with editing tools and the ability to view them anywhere, Lottie also provides a collection of many templates and animations, which are available online for free. Users can access these collections through any device. Moreover, they allow non-expert users to give a professional touch to their animations. Creators can also edit these animations and can download them in different formats, including Lottie, MP4, JSON, and GIF, allowing their use for multiple purposes. This animation library is the largest of its kind. It is updated daily due to the continuous addition of various animations by featured designers and animators.

Why is Lottie small?

Lottie files are small animation files, making them an excellent choice for animators and creators. We can understand the small size of Lottie files by comparing them with file formats, for instance, animated GIF, MOV and MP4.

Bitmaps and Vectors

Commonly used animation formats

Instead of being made up of pixels like the other types of file formats, including GIF, Lottie files are vector-based. This means that they consist of scalable shapes and vectors, and their size will change along with the scaling factor.

The commonly used animation file format consists of bitmaps. It means that they have grids, which carry a specific number of pixels, measured by pixels per inch (PPI). A bitmap resolution consists of fixed graphics, which tells how the colours should appear and the image should form.

Lottie animations

Lottie files, on the other hand, use Quadratic Bezier Curves (splines) to define elements, shapes and paths in 2-D space.

Suppose there are two points, P0 and P1 joined together through a line segment L1. Any point on this line segment has a t-value that represents the position of the point on the line. A t-value of 1 means that point is at P1 and a t-value of 0 means that point is at 0, anything in-between means the point is between P0 and P1. If we connect another point with P1, to generate another line segment L2, it will also have a point that moves on it according to its t-value. Joining these two points together creates a line segment L3. Now placing a point on L3 creates a very specific path for the point. This path is known as a Quadratic Bezier Curve. Similarly, Cubic Beziers requires 3 starting line segments.

Using these Bezier Curves, Lottie animations achieve all sorts of shapes and paths. Hence, an animation path in Lottie files includes a starting and ending point, two tangents (in-tangent and out-tangent of Bezier) and the frames they fall on.

Suppose in-tangent falls on the 1st frame and the out-tangent falls on the 120th frame, then increasing the duration above 120 frames will have no effect on the size of the Lottie animation.

Furthermore, the scaling, rotation and other functions in Lottie have vector or matrix form, making them extremely small animation format.

Lottie files use keyframes to define animation in time. One can think of them as a computer program, having lines or text of code, that describe animation in both time and space.

Resolution Independent

Lottie may be a small animation file format, however, its small size does not interfere with the quality of animations. With the advancement in technology, the resolution and graphics of animations have become better and better. The viewers admire animations with great resolution, and the quality of animation has a great impact on the viewer. The resolution of any animation is the number of pixels in each direction. The greater the number of pixels in a specific area, the greater will be the resolution of animation, graphics, or display. Usually, file size is also dependent on the number of pixels, meaning that small-sized files have a poor resolution compared to larger ones.

On the other hand, Lottie is independent of resolution, which means that their size does not depend upon the pixels of the animations. Every time a page is zoomed in or out, the mathematical calculations in Lottie recreate the image according to this new resolution.

Advantages of Small Lottie Files

There are several useful advantages of using Lottie files. These are:

Scalable

Lottie animations are scalable, which means that you can change their size without changing the number of pixels or resolution of the animation. Lottie files are small in size, but when opened on any device, their size can be changed according to the user’s needs, and it does not affect the quality.

Prevent sabotage of download speed

In today’s world, where everyone is busy and time is money, the small size of the file increases efficiency. Time taken by a file to download online depends upon the size of the file divided by the speed of the internet. Greater file size means greater time and data required to upload or download that file. The small-sized Lottie files prevent the user from this headache. They prevent the sabotage of download speed as they take a few moments to download, thus saving time and energy.

Easy to transfer

Large-sized files sabotage internet speed through their large downloading size, and such files also take a lot of time to upload and transfer from one place to another. Some web platforms or apps do not even allow the transfer of larger files, generating difficulty for the users. The Lottie files are small-sized, which means that they can be downloaded, uploaded, or transferred with great ease and in a short time without raising much trouble.

Saves space

Increased use of technology has created a mind-boggling amount of data in the past few years, raising concerns about its sustainable storage. According to an estimation, there were 59ZB data in 2020, which is expected to grow into 175ZB in 2025. In such a situation, the focus has been shifted towards finding data formats that store the maximum amount of data in minimum space. Lottie files can act as a solution to this problem due to their small size and their ability to compress data without compromising the quality of animations.

User friendly

One of the main reasons for small-sized Lottie files is to ensure consumer convenience. The small size of Lottie makes it user-friendly. It also expands the categories of the audience that can use it as a user can use, upload and transfer such files through a wide range of platforms and devices. The small size of Lottie files makes Lottie user-friendly. Furthermore, it enables the use of Lottie in areas with minimum internet speed or on devices with minimum space left.

Multi-platform use

We can use Lottie on multiple platforms due to its small size. Different web platforms and apps allow the transfer of files of different sizes. Lottie files have a size smaller than that of GIF. Sometimes, these files can have a small size like that of 50kb. Such a small size of Lottie files allow it to be transferred through various platforms that allow very little file size transfer, for example, chat apps. The small size of Lottie files also makes it perfect for web platforms like WordPress, which helps the users create an impact with the animations.

Multi-device use

The small size of Lottie allows its use on multiple devices, including smartwatches, Android, Windows, and iOS. In this way, Lottie files are accessible at any place and at any time.

Small animation file format: Lottie!

Lottie files are a great format for animations mainly due to their small size, interactive nature, and amazing quality. It is small due to several reasons, including its attempt to be user-friendly, save space, and prevent the sabotage of internet speed. The small size of Lottie makes it efficient easy to transfer. Despite the small size of these files, they have amazing resolution and are scalable according to users’ requirements. The small size of Lottie is one of its characteristics that allow its worldwide use on multiple platforms and devices.

Different Animation File Formats: Why Lottie Is The Best One?

12/01/2022
blog

Animation is the art of turning images and drawings into moving objects. Traditionally animations included hand drawings. These drawings were then photographed, and run in a film to make them appear moving. Innovation and technology have also revolutionized the art of animations. Resultantly, most of the animations today involve CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery).

What are animation file formats?

File formats define the way the information gets encoded and stored in a computer. Animation file formats use bits to store animations on a computer. There are many animation file formats available today. It is essential to choose a file format that is right according to your requirements, such as file size and quality.

The different animation file formats

Let us take a look at some common animation file formats available today:

MPEG

Motion Picture Experts Group or MPEG is an animation file format that is known for producing high-quality animations. The format of MPEG has high compatibility with different browsers. It can run on multiple platforms, like quick time and windows media player and ensures high quality. Social media platforms like Whatsapp support these files, making them extremely popular.

AVI

AVI, also known as Audio-Video Interleave, is the animation file format launched by Microsoft in competition with Apple.  It has good image quality, and at the same time, its file size is big. However, it does not support chapters of videos, nor does it allow direct streaming. Although it has a high acceptance rate and is widely distributed due to the wide use of Microsoft Windows, its large file size makes it an inflexible format to use.

MOV

MOV is the quick time video format, developed by Apple. It is popular for editing and has little use for watching videos. A few multimedia playback programs support this format, and hence, it has a low acceptance rate for actual devices. It shows compatibility with platforms, like Windows platforms and Macintosh. It is also, sometimes, used to store video and movie files. Furthermore, MOV has alpha channel support, meaning MOV images have adjustable opacity. Since MOV files can go entirely transparent, these are excellent for embedding animations.

CSS

Cascading Style Sheets or CSS is an animation file format that allows transitions of animations from one style to another. They are flexible and easy to use. Along with that, being robust and well-running is also a key benefit of the CSS animation format. Cascading style sheets allow the browser to control the sequence of animations which helps in improving the browsing experience. It is a method sheet language that helps to do spontaneous changes. Although it reduces file size during transfer, different types of CSS (CSS, CSS1, or CSS3) sometimes confuse the browser. Lack of security also gives CSS a disadvantage. CSS works differently for everyone as it is different for every browser.

GIF

GIFs are the Graphics Interchange Format, initially launched in 1987. They are commonly utilized for animations and other purposes. GIFs have a small size and can enable transparent background allowing professional use of animations. They are better able to convey the message as they can show emotions and movements. At the same time, GIFs cannot be edited once coded. They also have a limited colour option restricting your creative options. Even though GIFs have a small size, they are dependent on internet speed and at times, display low quality. Furthermore, Animated GIFs are static images, supported by Whatsapp stickers and various other social media platforms. Hence, they are easy to share

SVG

SVG, also known as Scalable Vector Graphics, is an animation file format that was first launched in 1999. During the first decade of the twenty-first century, web browsers started to integrate and support SVG. It has a fast page load and doesn’t require an HTTP request to load it, enhancing the user experience. Furthermore, It has a text-based format and is scalable. It has a small size but, at the same time, is not detailed. And it doesn’t fully cross platforms as there are still users who have browsers that don’t support SVG, meaning that they can’t view SVG content.

SWF

SWF or the Small Web Format is a vector-based animation file format. Its design ensures efficient delivery over the web. The graphics of a small web format are easily scalable, fitting it into screen sizes. It is easy to compress and allows smooth compression. It supports a transparent background. Although SWF is a good file format, it has a major disadvantage: it needs to be supported by Macromedia flash, otherwise, the device will not support it.

JSON

JSON, which is the abbreviation of JavaScript Object Notation, is an animation file format that allows file storage and data interchange. It lets them use readable text to store and transmit animation data files. One of the many benefits of JSON files is that it is easy to describe. The use of hierarchical and syntax structure allows the application to interpret it themselves. It is simple and compact, allowing easy transmissions of animations files without lowering quality.

What is Lottie File Format?

Lottie is an animation file format designed by Gabriel Peal, Brandon Withrow, and Leland Richardson in partnership with the animator Abdul-Karim. It is based on JSON. Department of AIRBNB designed this library, and it is very easy to use. It traditionally uses the platform of Adobe After Effects animations as of now. Lottie animation solves many problems that animators face while using other traditional platforms.

How to animate Lottie Files?

Following are the major steps to animate Lottie animations:

  1. Develop the resources to import them into Adobe After Effects.
  2. Create the desired animation in Adobe After Effects.
  3. After creating animation, export the newly created JSON files through the platform of the Bodymovin plugin.
  4.  Create the project in XCode and connect it to Lottie.
  5.  Test your animation on a device and view it for any  further alterations

Why is Lottie files the best animation file format?

Following are the main reasons that make Lottie animation the best choice for animators:

Small File Size

Efficient animation file formats are the need of today. Today’s fast-paced world demands file formats that deliver the maximum in the least size, which means that it should provide good quality animations without occupying much space in the devices. Lottie animations provide a small file size while ensuring that animation quality is not compromised. The reason is that Lottie files are a vector-based file format, achieved using vector graphics and keyframing.

Resolution Independent Along with Stability

Another quality of Lottie animations is their ability to scale without compromising the resolutions of the animations. It means that even zooming and trying to fit animations to different screens doesn’t mess up the quality and resolutions of animations.

Multi-platform Reach

Multi-platform reach is a great benefit of Lottie files which makes it the best choice for animators all around the globe. Platforms like Android, Web, iOS, and React Native support it, enabling the user to use it without doing any modifications at any time and place.

Compatible

One of the best things about Lottie animations is that they are compatible with almost every web builder. You can use it to make animations for your website, and you can even use it for apps as well. They are perfect for making animations that work for websites builders, like WordPress, Wix, Storyblok, and Web-flow, etc.

Higher Quality

Lottie files have small sizes and are compact, but at the same time, they ensure that the quality of the animations remains intact, making it the best animation file format. It allows high-quality animations that you can store and transmit to different devices as small-sized files.

Allows Manipulations in Run Time

It allows the animators to apply modifications and transformations in animation at run time while using multiple platforms. It also allows the use of animation elements at the run time, helping animators to improve their animation easily and quickly. This allows interactivity, real-time transformations, and edits.

Open-Source Library

It has an open-source library which means that its resources are free to use, making it is a cost-effective solution for animators. The open-source library allows the animators to use the Lottie platform for enhancing their resources and tools.

In the above image, you can see that you can have the access to their open-library available to use from https://lottiefiles.com/

Lottie File – The best animation file format!

Animation is the art that requires the animators to choose the best-suited options and platforms for them that don’t compromise the quality of their animations and be easy to use. Lottie files in animation are the best option for animators and everyone else who wants to animate and is unsure which animation file format to use. It is not only easy to use and has a small size, but at the same time, it doesn’t compromise on quality and allows manipulating animations along with the run time.
