Dos and Don’t of the Lunar New Year

Chinese New Year’s Dos.

1. Fire up the fireworks.

It’s preferable if you throw a lot of crackers or fireworks. Not only would you create a symphony of colors in the dark sky, but the high-pitched banging sounds are also said to vanquish evil spirits. Throughout the first 15 days of the Lunar New Year celebrations in most areas of China, you’ll experience a steady assault of loud booms overnight.

2. Dumplings should be consumed.

The following are some of the reasons why consuming dumplings during the festivities is a common practice in northern China:

  • They are quite tasty.
  • “Jiaozi,” the Chinese name for them, is comparable to the archaic term for new, and it replaces the old.
  • The Chinese-style dumplings are shaped like medieval gold coins. A platter of dumplings resembles a large mound of gold, suggesting prosperity in the future year.

3. Your house should be clean.

Wipe, sweep, scrape, dust, hoover, steam – do all that it takes to get your residence spotless before the end of the night of Chinese New Year’s Eve. The goal is to get rid of just about any bad fortune that has gathered in your home over the last year.

Chinese New Year’s Don’ts.

1. Washing or cutting your hair.

Leave your hair in its natural condition during the first day of the year. The initial letter in the Chinese term for prosper is the very same as the Chinese character for hairs. This implies that cleaning or cutting it off is viewed as robbing yourself of good fortune. They believes that this significantly diminishes your prospects of success in the coming year.

2. Buy books.

It’s really bad luck to buy books and other materials during the 15-day Festival Season, so book lovers should start stocking up before the Chinese New Year. Purchasing a book shortly after ushering in the New Year is interpreted as a sign of ill luck. It is considered ill luck because the Chinese word for “book” (shu) sounded the same as that of the word for “loss.” Furthermore, don’t give anybody books or greeting cards as a gift because it would be akin to wishing them ill misfortune.

But since sending anything in the form of a book (which includes greeting cards) is frowned upon. It is recommended that you gift your loved ones Lottie animations, which are not made of paper or books as they can be shared electronically.
